Review: Our Third (And Final) HelloFresh Meal

Recipe from HelloFresh.

This is our third and final review of our HelloFresh experience. The last meal we made was the Shawarma Meatballs with Bulgur and Sumac Veggies. You can read our first and second reviews to get an idea of the whole experience.

The ingredients for this recipe were probably the most interesting out of the three recipes. Although, my zucchini wasn't in great shape. It felt slightly past its prime and was quit soft and bruised and cut on the base. The biggest issue with this meal was the texture of the beef. I'm not sure exactly what kind of beef they're using, but it has a very peculiar texture. It was very, very dry but I don't know what the fat ratio was, but I've never worked with ground beef quite like this. When I ate it, the texture vaguely reminded me of beef sticks and I can't really begin to explain how unnerving that was. It just didn't have the same texture of any beef I've ever eaten. My husband says "The meat was weird. Not really bad, but off putting."

I did like the sumac vegetables and the bulgur combination. I do think HelloFresh could stand to get a little more inventive with the recipes. All three recipes used red onions and two out of the three recipes used Roma tomatoes which lends to that feeling of the meals not feeling very original.

My overall rating of HelloFresh is a C.

I don't find the recipes to be interesting or creative and I feel like that the areas they're not doing well in reduces the overall value of the service. If I were to sign up for a meal delivery plan, I would want to see interesting ingredients paired with thoughtful recipes. I realize they have a bottom line, but I can't really see how they can stay competitive against these other services when they cost as much but offer inferior recipes.
